According to the USDA and the FDA, they would oversee the production of lab-grown meat, which may be available soon at your local grocer.

According to a joint statement, the two agencies will work together to “foster these innovative food products and maintain the highest standards of public health.” In charge of regulating the collection, banking and growing of cells used to create the fake meat, would be the FDA. While the USDA would be in charge of production and labeling. Also, according to the joint statement, “a transition from the FDA to the USDA oversight will occur during the harvest stage.”

The agencies are looking to leverage the experience of the FDA in regulating cell-culture technology and living biosystems, along with the USDA’s experience in regulating poultry and livestock for human consumption. Both agencies assure the safety of these lab-produced meats for human consumption.

The first hamburger created from cultured meat was in 2013. Since then, funding has skyrocketed for research into artificially created meat products. Lab-made meats are created from stem cells taken from poultry and livestock which are then turned into muscle tissue. This is striking considering the pushback when it comes to stem cell therapy for humans. Nonetheless, high-profile investors and private companies are investing heavily into artificial meat research and development.

Touting its benefits, advocates say lab-grown meat will end the practice of animals being bred for slaughter. 9 billion chickens and 32 million cattle are killed annually in the United States. Climate change pushers are also on board. They claim artificial meat would limit climate change.
